Jeddah: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak believes there will be better understanding between Umno and PAS on issues affecting the ummah following the return of pro-ulama leaders at the helm of the Islamist party.
PAS, said the Prime Minister, would be guided by a unified leadership that would make it easier for them to discuss whatever possibilities that might lie ahead.
“It is a more unified leadership and we hope that it will be something which is going to be positive for the ummah. We are willing to discuss whatever we can for the sake of the ummah,” he told reporters here yesterday.
Najib is here for a three-day official visit on the invitation of King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Asked if this willingness included talks on a unity government, Najib, who is also Umno president, said it was still too early to touch on that issue.
We need to give some time to the new leadership to settle down first.”
On whether he would be more comfortable with new line-up in PAS, Najib said this was the choice made by the PAS delegates.
“The delegates have made it very clear that they want ulama to lead the party. They must have considered all possibilities and as far as Umno is concerned, we respect the choice they have made,” he said.
